Fellowship, fellowship!
Love, love! Unity, Unity!"

These words of Abdu’l Baha are the battle-cry of the army of Light!!
The National Spiritual Assembly (of Belize, Central America) recently consulted on the meaning of the development of the distinctive character of Bahá’í life, particularly in the local communities, and how we can achieve it in Belize. In the end, it is this that we all yearn for, it is this true spirit of love and fellowship demonstrated in deeds that we expect of our Baha’i communities. When we do not feel it, we are disappointed. We all understand at a very deep level that this is what the Baha’i Faith is for.
"The people of the world not only need the laws and principles of the Bahá’í Faith—they desperately need to see the love that is engendered by it in the hearts of its followers, and to partake of that atmosphere of tolerance, understanding, forbearance and active kindness which should be the hall-mark of a Bahá’í Community." (written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi)
‘Active kindness’ is the expression of love and compassion in our lives. We need search no farther than the wish of our own selves to know how to manifest these qualities. What do we want when we feel lonely or sick, when we have pressing challenges or impending tragedies? What difference would a caring, concerned, and friendly face make, an understanding heart smiling brightly at us with encouragement? Please share with the friends in your consultation what other ways ‘active kindness’ is needed, and can be demonstrated.
Abdu’l Baha advised, "We should all visit the sick. When they are in sorrow and suffering, it is a real help and benefit to have a friend come. Happiness is a great healer to those who are ill. In the East it is the custom to call upon the patient often and meet him individually. The people in the East show the utmost kindness and compassion to the sick and suffering. This has greater effect than the remedy itself. You must always have this thought of love and affection when you visit the ailing and afflicted."
These were not mere words that ended in words. Abdu’l Baha was described this way: "He was a counsellor to every man, a true and loving father to the poor and the downtrodden. He would spend many hours every day visiting the sick, providing medical treatment, food and clothing for those who needed them. He was indeed the ‘Master of ‘Akká’."
"The Universal House of Justice graphically depicts the impact of the declining process on humanity, relates it to mankind’s spiritual search and underlines the pressing responsibility of the Bahá’ís, both to increase the tempo of their teaching activities, "lest the opportunity be lost in the swiftly changing moods of a frenetic world", and to create the kind of community that offers such a distinctive pattern of life that it will "rekindle hope among the increasingly disillusioned members of society". (Letters of The Universal House of Justice, 1993 Nov 09, Promoting Entry by Troops, p. 2)
It is the desire and purpose of every Baha’i to rekindle hope in others. It takes no special skill to visit someone, yet what a boon it will be to their spirit! In this way, you will assist even in the growth of our community, because love is the glue of the spirit that holds us all together. In what other ways can we each touch each other’s heart and demonstrate that the Baha’i life is distinct from others’, something that we are proud of, something that we want to give as a gift to the world of humanity? Please share your ideas with the rest of us through the Newsletter.
"Say, O brethren! Let deeds, not words, be your adorning." (Baha'u'llah, in Hidden
